When liquid chlorine is injected into an airline flowing down into a water well, what will the chlorine do the carbon steel airline pipe and how quickly? What about when the chlorine mixes with the water that is incontact with the steel? Does the chlorine need washed out to prevent corrosion and how soon after injection is complete?

Dear Sir: It is difficult to address your specific questions with the available information; however, understand that if the chlorine mixes with available water, you should expect high carbon steel corrosion rates. Hope this helps! David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.

David, Here is more detail. When the driller completes drilling the hole, he will inject chlorine into a compressed airstream. The mixture flows thru steel pipe, thru our rock hammer, and is exhausted into the well. Once the airstream is turned off, all the steel parts will have a film of chlorine all over. The water in the well will then settle to the bottom and mix with the chlorine. The chlorine on the steels outer surfaces will mix with a large quantity of water. The chlorine inside the steel parts will mix with no water to small pockets and drops of water so the critical internal steel parts will see the highest concentrations of chlorine/water. Some areas of chlorine may not be exposed to water until the next day when another well is drilled. Based on your initial answer, I should recommend to my customer to tear down and clean our rock hammer as soon as possible after the well is complete to prevent steel corrosion (any small amounts of corrosion can be detrimental to our rock hammers) Loren Myers Loudon Industries
