Dear Sir, I am a Chemical Engineer by profession and I am working on a critical data analysis design. I was just wondering what will be the expected life against corrosion of SS 316L / SS 304L and Carbon Steel tubes if it was subjected to a 25% concentration calcuim chloride environment @ 50 deg. C. Will there be any effect if the conc. is lowered to about 15%. Also, will there be a large effect if the temperature of the environment increases to about 100 deg. C? Hope you could send me your reply soonest. Is there any literature in which I could exactly determine the life of the materials? Thank you and awaits your comments. Richard

Richard: Thank you for your interest in our technical discussion forum. Regarding your question about the expected life of 304SS/316SS/Cs in your stated environment, that is a dangerous questions to answer in the contect of a discussion forum post. If it is indeed a "critical data analysis" design, then it deserves a more thorough treatment on a consulting basis. We can help you with your problem on that basis, if you desire. However, for a quick answer, I would not use 304SS/316SS with aqueous calcium chloride solutions at all. Corrosion rates of the carbon steel will depend on other environmental factors which you do not mention. Hope this helps! David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.

I thank you for your response and really appreciate your help. In connection with the other parameters, below are some data gathered on the water analysis report as follows: PH - 7.01 TDS - 64 ppm TH - 63 ppm TA - 65 ppm Cl - 10 ppm Silica - 25 ppm If the above report was to be use at a temperature of 50 deg. C, can I predict the expected life of the materials? Also, will there be any galvanic corrosion if the tubes be welded on a SS304L shell? Hope you could comment on this. Again, thank you and hoping for your reply soonest. Richard
