Recently, my plant is having turnaround and we did chemical cleaning for our CO2 system by 1. Soaking our reboilers (SS304L) with low concentration of HCl 2. Circulating plate heat exchangers (SS316) with REDOX and later, soaking with low HCl. After the chemical cleaning, due to unavailability of equipment, the reboilers and plate heat exchangers were left out exposed with air for few days before water jetting. During leak test, both reboilers and plate heat exchangers experienced severe leak and needed to be replaced. My question is, could the leak be caused by the Chloride in HCl, catalyzed by long time exposure to air? Please help.

Dear Sir: Not knowing what condition your equipment was in before the cleaning, certainly extended exposure of the 304SS/316SS to HCL could have caused the leaks you are experiencing, with or without air. David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.

I think that graphite heat exchangers can meet the corrosion resistant condition. If you are interested, please contact us by e-mail: cngraphite@163.net or access our website http://www.graphitequip.com

HCl is one of the worst things you can put on stainless steel, and in your case most certainly caused the leakage.
