Our customer is using 316ss shaft and rubber seal for their pump. They are afraid that fretting corrosion will occur and see if there is any solution to prevent it, such as some sort of coating on the shaft. Any suggestion?

Calvin: Fretting corrosion on a rotating shaft is not likely. It also isn't likely while stationary unless the rubber is very hard and/or the cyclic load on the shaft is high. Someone should review the specific geometry and loads to see if fretting corrosion is a potential concern before trying to apply a remedy. Hope this helps! David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.

Thx David. If something nasty occurs, what would be the remedy? The customer asked for any coating on the shaft that could prevent the fretting wear. Any suggestion such as TiN coating?

Calvin: We hesitate to make specific recommendations without the proper background information. In general, fretting damage can be minimized by making the hardnesses between the two contacting materials greater, increasing the hardness of the component of interest, increasing the clearance between the two items, or reducing the magnititude of the cyclic loads.
