The effect of ammonia in promoting SCC in brass in the presence of a tensile stress is very well documented. I understand that chlorine in domestic water supplies can also create this problem with these brasses. Is this true? Can anyone steer me to a definitive (and easy to acquire) reference for this?

D. W. Smith: I can't easily scare up references without doing some leg work, however, I have not heard of chlorine being a cracking agent with the brass copper alloys. David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.
