I am trying to determine a "safe" total chlorine/chloride level for water that is to be in contact with a 316L cooling jacket at 300°F. Locating any recommended chloride limits for a 300°F application over a 10 year duration has been very difficult. I understand that specifying an exact limit is risky because chlorides can concentrate, but what I am looking for is a number that is definitely below the danger zone. Would a conservative limit be in the range of 1 ppm? 0.1 ppm? 0.01 ppm? Any guidance that you can provide would be most appreciated. Best regards, Larry Zanko

Larry: There is no "safe" limit for the reasons that you suggested, i.e., concentration. However, based on literature references that we are aware of, you can consider an upper safe limit of 1 ppm in the absence of concentration. David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.
