We have an assembly of stainless steel components with one phospher bronze (C54400) component. Several assemblies were put together but the passivation operation on the stainless steel parts was left out. To disassemble the parts will result in loss of some components. What could happen to the phospher bronze part if we passivated the whole assembly? The passivation process is through the use of nitric acid. We did one sample and the phospher bronze part was faded in appearance. Thanks for any input.

Dear Sir: The copper alloys are not particularly resistant to oxidizing environments, including nitric acid. However, if the passivating time period is short, and the nitric acid is neutralized following the passivating treatment, the overall metal loss from corrosion should be low. This response does not address other unintended effects such as the discoloring of the bronze component, critical tolerances, etc. An other option would be to selectively hand passivate the SS components, if practical.
