I have an instance where a white material that has been identified as lead appears uniformly over the surface of a C360 brass motor hub during shipment from China to Malaysia. A zinc-plated steel rotor is swaged onto the brass hub. The motors are packed in styrofoam, then the styrofoam is wrapped in plastic before loading into a cardboard box and shipped. Motors shipped from Japan do not exhibit this "characteristic". Humidity/temperature tests have only caused a tarnishing of the brass to appear. The lead wipes off easily, it was first described as a white dust. All the parts in the entire box are affected fairly equally. What is the cause of the lead on the brass? I assume it is leeching from the 360 brass due to the brass' lead content, but we are puzzled by the cause. -Jerry

Jerry: Just a guess; however, lead can be smeared onto the surface of leaded copper alloys during machining. It is possible that the surface lead is oxidizing to lead oxide during transit. If it were important, we could help get to a root cause for the "white dust". Hope this helps! David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.
