I am in the process of preparing a technical paper on the technical justification for regulations governing asphalt. In the course of my research I have discovered a phenomena in which heated asphalt in a tank (above ground or underground) will corrode the tank. Have you ever seen any case of this taking place? If you have do you know the physical process by which this takes place? Best Regards, Donald Coe

Donald: You don't say whether the tank is corroding above the asphalt level or below it. If above the asphalt level, dilute sulfurous/sulfuric acids may be forming and condensing on the wall. If below the asphalt, we can only guess high-temperature sulfur attack, depending on the temperature and if the asphalt has appreciable sulfur. More details might shed some light on the matter. Hope this helps! David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.

It is below the asphalt level, in the bottome of the tank. Donald Coe

Donald: What's the asphalt temperature and is water or sulfur present? David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.

Let's assume that both are present in one case and then consider them individually. I am preparing a paper which will address the issue of regulation asphalt in tanks and I am going to take a rather conservative approach. The asphalt under consideration is "cutback" asphalt at SC-800 with a temp of 140F.
