Application: Gas Turbine exhaust ducting operating at 1000F in marine environment. Ducting will not be used for load bearing. Question: Is Cor-ten suitable for 25 years life? Thanks

M. Raza: Part of the answer to your question depends on what the 1000F gas species are and if they will form a corrosive aqueous environment upon condensing. High-temperature sulfur species may increase corrosion rates above those based on simple oxidation. You also don't state what the duct metal design thickness is as a function of anticipated corrosion rates. P.S. Corten is not especially more resistant in 1000F flue gas than regular carbon steel. The ducting metal thickness is 3/8". The composition of gas turbine exhaust does not have any corrosive components. The ducting will be externally insulated, but operating in gulf of mexico may expose the salty environment. Do you think 316L or 321H better choice? I don't know which one will be cost effective for life span of 25 years?

M. Raza: I do not believe that corten offers any significant advantages vs. plain carbon steel at 1000F with respect to high-temperature oxidation resistance. If you have no corrosive species in the exhaust there are tables and graphs that detail oxidation rates of carbon steel at 1000F. Again, total corrosion rates may be influenced by condensed phases during downtimes. With chlorides potentially present, I would not advise the use of the 300-series stainless steels.
