I'm servicing a pasta cooker. It is 304 ss but there is rust around the drain and pitting? I'm guessing the area is sensitized and and now corroding because of the enviroment -100 water , ... and pasta? I have 309L (and 308)rods and thinking of welding over pitting and grind to create a new surface and weld a new304 tube in place of old drain pipe - will corrosion occur shortly again? If so how can I prevent? Thank you

Nathan: If the pitting is not structurally a problem or in danger of creating a perforation, you might consider just removing the rust with something like citric acid or a phosphoric acid based rust remover (found at automotive shops). If the pitting isn't deep, try just grinding them out and leaving as is. If you must weld, you can use 308SS filler. If the pasta cooker is low carbon 304SS, you should not sensitize when welding. Hope this helps! David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.
