I have some contradiction here... For a galvanized item, to avoid Zinc Penetration Cracking & Embrittlement problems in welds , weld edge and adjacent portions are removed ( skinned out ) from galvanizing by burning & dressing the Zinc out. But the concept of "Weld-through Primers" where these zinc rich primers are applied at the weld areas prior to welding are contradicting the former one. Please discuss this issue to make it clear. regards

Debasis Are you sure weld- through- primers used / recommended for use contain 92% metallic zinc (for use on welds before welding). Weld -through- primers are normally given for surface portection before welding - mostly organic based or alkyd based. I am not sure if any one specifically recommends use of weld- through- primers containing metallic zinc rich inorganic paint (92% metallic zinc primer). If such zinc rich inorganic primers are recommended / used, the weld will be susceptible for cracking due to embrittlement. I doubt if weld-throgh -primers contain contain metallic zinc. I have not come across specification of such use. However, i suggest that you can check with paint manufacturers on their product formulation and product specification ( to be sure) if zinc rich weld-through-primers are in use.
