Oil Drilling Contractor has internally approved procedure for the cladding of Drilling Jars, Mandrels, Male Splines, etc using FCAW with ER 420 T-1 with shielding gas. I am going to propose using Plasma Transferred Arc with AISI 410 as the filler material. I expect the PTA welding to have lower heat input, produce better weldment, better quality all-around. Question: Why would the OEM procedure call for AISI 420? For mechanical or corrosion properties? or because FCAW with 420 is cheap? Any problems with the 410, I have used it on non-specified components (the same parts before) and had no problems. regards, Stephen Booth Teknokraft Indonesia sbooth@rad.net.id
