I've got a brass brackett that was used in a marine application that failed. It appears that a crack developed over time ( some green coloration in parts of the break). It appeared that this braket was significantly undersized for the loads it had. It was only under significant stress in anchoring applications which occurred ocassionaly. The bracket had been in service for approximately 20 years. Does anyone think it is likely that this brass bracket failed due to corrosion or stress corrosion ? Or is it likely that it just failed due to excessive loading?

hi patmulhern, I don't think it is stress corrosion after 20 years of service. Anyway there is not so much acid in sea water, is it? For stress corrosion you need residual or applied stress and a corrosive medium. I guess the failure was due to dezincification. this would also explain the green stuff on the material, because this is a typical layer for copper and not for brass. after dezincification there is only copper left of the brass and so the green stuff would occur. after dezincifictaion the material is also more brittle at this particular location where it occured and sea water is a very typical medium for dezincification to occur. hope I could be of some help.
