I have an experience that SS304 stariner on the suction pump get embrittled. Could this be happened due to caustic injection on the system ? The service fluid is water containing about 200 ppm acetic acid neutralized by 45%-wt caustic soda injection to maintain the pH at 5.5 - 6.8. Could the overdosing of caustic soda create this embritlement on the Strainer?. Asep Karmana E.Alfi

Dear Asep Karmana E.Alfi , In the Material Selection table w.r.t. Caustic SCC, SS 304 falls under Category E alloys and is in principle useful to 93oC and max. 50% concentration. As your caustic is round to 50% and if your temperature is nearby 85C-90C w.r.t. time your strainer can have real time susceptibility to have Caustic SCC and network can braek. Also impurities here can act as poison which can aggravate the situation. regards if you have any other comment in this regard pl. share.
