I have a pump shaft that I believe is 316 ss, but that may just be the "nominal" designation. We are seeing what appears to be small pits over the entire shaft that is exposed to the process. I am aware of 303 and other FM stainless steels, but what about others? Is 316 ss machinable?

Petey: Yes, 316SS is machinable. The free machining grades will provide longer tool life. Hope this helps! David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.
