I need to spec the material to be used in a duct heater that has 16,000 cfm of air at 100% R.H. and the presence of TCE and PCE (ie. lots of chlorides) where temperatures on the heat exchanger will be elevated. They've had severe corrosion problems in the past with other types of steel (304 and 409)- heaters needing replacement after 1.5 years in service. Any idea how well 317 would hold up in this environment?

Jeff: You don't state the "elevated" temperatures. I would consider the merits of an immersion service organic coating over carbon steel, depending on the temperature. The performance of 317SS will depend on the temperature, the concentration of chlorides at the surface and the pH. David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.
