Hi, i have a question that we are dozing chlorine continuously as oxidizing biocide in our recirculating water in an oil refinery unit, and maintained free available chlorine residual from 1 to 2ppm with an ORP(mV) value greater that 450mV, now what will be the effect of chlorine on over all corrosion if some time its being dozed in greater amount,as i have heard the term chlorine based corrosion. Does high level of chlorine in recirculating water has any thing to do with corrosion. one thing more in the last month when i have noticed the high values of FAC and ORP, the corrosion coupon test result is high. please explain.............. regards, TARIQ KHAN

Tariq: Excessive chlorination can promote pitting corrosion of the stainless steels; however, it's effect in the usual dosages on carbon steel should be minimal. It's effect may depend on the scaling tendencies of the water, i.e. positive or negative Langlier index and other corrosion inhibitors which may be being added. Hope this helps!
