Hi, I need to weld onto a 0.29% Carbon steel pipe carrying natural gas condensate. The condensate has a caustic concentration in the range of 0.1 to 0.8 ppm. The temperature of the pipe during welding will go up to about 150 degrees celcius. Is the concentration of caustic enough to induce stress corrosion cracking and embrittlement, and are there any texts out there that specify a minimum acceptable caustic concentration for welding on carbon steel pipes? Thank you.

Very low concentration of caustic. Go for welding. There would not be any problem until or unless the temperature goes beyond 170C. Regards, Ashfaq Anwer http://thepetrostreet.com
