Is there any material (or coating) that will stand up to the halogens? Specifically, I need to produce slitter knives for use in an environment that is wetted with iodine. I am using Crucible CPM S90V material, and there is severe intergranular corrosion if the material. These blades do need to be hardenable, HRC 56 at least.

Dear Sir: That is a tough one. We have experience with selection and performance of slitter knives and know of no perfect solution regarding performance vs. cost benefits. Some people use various tool steels, some use 440SS and discard them when they break, some use various sintered carbides, e.g., cobalt or titanium based powder metallurgy blades loaded with carbides. Hope this helps! David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.
