I encounter a failure case in which the fracture characteristic and crack metallographic feature of the fractured part accord well with the character of the cadmium induced steel brittlness, but the employed temperature of the fractured part is only near 100 Celsius degrees. However, the usual guideline for the lower limit temperature for occuring Cadmium induced steel brittleness is about 180 Celsius degrees. I would like to know the lowest temperature for occuring Cadmium induced steel brittleness. Many thanks.

Sir: 100C is low for cadmium solid metal induced embrittlement (SMIE) , based on published literature. 180C is closer to the temperatures we have seen for cadmium SMIE. Perhaps understanding of the actual component temperature is not accurate? Hope this helps! David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.
