Good morning to everyone ! We are experiencing "mesa corrosion" in our decoking water system to cut the coker drums. the piping system is made from API 5L B material spec, and we registered a 100 ppm level of chlorides in the service. Does any one have experience in some countermeasures of this kind of problem? A corrosion control with VOC inhibitors is feasible with good results to track it? some internal coating in the piping? Any ideas are welcome! Thanks a lot for your time. Nice regards, Euclides Prieto, M. Eng. DCU Unit Inspection Engineer Ameriven Crude Upgrader Jose, Venezuela email: eprieto@ameriven.com

Euclides: Mesa corrosion is sometimes associated with high velocities and water containing CO2. You don't say how long the carbon steel piping lasts or what the corrosion rates are. 304SS may be a viable alternative if the temperature is not too high and solids don't accumulate to concentrate the chlorides. If the coker water is once through, inhibitors may be too expensive. Hope this helps! David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.
