Leak detected in our Cold Box, which have 5 streams. Possible mode of failure is either due to mechanical damage (i.e. due to excessive stress or fatigue) or attack by mercury (Hg) or/and other contaminants. The possible damage mechanisms due to presence of mercury (Hg) is (i) Amalgamation (ii) Amalgam Corrosion (iii) Liquid Metal Embrittlement (iv) Galvanic Corrosion The aluminum alloys used is alloy 5083 and 3003. We would like to know whether alloy 5083 and 3003 are susceptible to the Hg Attack Damage Mechanisms listed above, and what are the condition when the attack is possible/likely?
