Presently we have the columns and pumps with SS 316L metallurgy in amine service. I would like to know whether we can go for SS 304L in amine service. Can galvanic corrosion result by using SS 304L and SS316L together in the service.

Dear Sir: "Amine" service is pretty generic. Amines can contain many differerent contaminants which will affect corrosion rates. Typically, one could consider 304SS as a lower cost replacement for 316SS unless appreciable formates and/or chlorides are present. 304SS pumps may not be less expensive than 316SS pumps. Hope this helps! David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.

Of course, galvanic corrosioon could occur. My teachers used to telle me that every heterogeneity leads to a corrosion potntial. The proper question are: 1- is this potential important enough to bring such corrosion. it depends only on your fluid. 2- are ther electrolytes in your fluid? No electrolytes, no galvanic corrion: electrons must migrate, and it is the job of those particles.
