1" 90-10 Cu-Ni piping welded with 70-30 Cu-Ni filler (sokect weld of pipe to 90 degree elbow). Corrosion pitting (leading to pinhole) of base metal area immediately adjacent to weld, after 1 year of service. Temp is 40C. Any experience of this damage, please share and kindly provide damage mode. Suspect galvanic effect. Tests on-going to prove/disprove. Any mitigations measure or material upgrade/change most welcome. Thanking you.

Although 70Cu 30Ni is nobler than copper alone, they are very close each other in seawater galvanic series so, I don%E2%80™t think your corrosion mechanism was galvanic corrosion. You need to check if your welding filler metal was really 70Cu 30Ni. You should also investigate if the fluid service of your pipe was submitted of any kind of contamination, which induces corrosion on the stressed base metal heat affected zone. Thanks Luis. I didn't mean galvanic effect bewteen weld metal and pipe. I mean localized galvanic effect; perhaps strain-induced anodes/cathodes at area adjacent to weld. Water analysed and no sulfides/SRBs. We are rather puzzled and continue to search. Any other ideas?

It seems that your copper pipe is being corroded by cold-water attack because of well water low velocity, low hardness and pH less than 8.5. You should have high oxygen and carbon dioxide content, maybe high sulfates, chlorides and dissolved solids, which are prone to copper. Copper ion deposition from copper pipe in the system causes pitting. If contaminants deposit onto the copper surface, differential aeration cells are set up, and pit the surface. Thanks again Luis. Howerver, note pH is 7, velocity measured as around 1.5 m/s and O2 very neglegible, i.e. water is unaerated. Note that attack iv very localized and not at anywhere else on pipe base metal. All attacks are at BM areas adjacent to weld. Found copper oxide deposits but no tubercles. can send you some photos if you provide your email address. Thanks again for your continued interest.
