We have shortage of nitrogen supply and want to preserve the idle equipments using Hydrogen with 99 % purity at ambient temperature and slight positive pressure. Will hydrogen create any problem in CS equipments? regards,

Krish: You shouldn't have any issues with using hydrogen as an inert gas for protecting carbon steel equipment from corrosion during storage or idle times. However, you may have more difficulties maintain hydrogen pressure, based on seal leaks, than with nitrogen. The hydrogen molecules are itty bitty. Hope this helps! Krish Hydrogen gas to be used for preserving your C.S equipment is not a major problem (from inert gas preservation). However, hydrogen leak could lead to serious problems. Hydrogen leak to atmosphere and any indvertent mechanical tightening for stopping leaks in flange or seal joints or during lightning or heavy rain with thunder /lightning may lead to siutations of catastrophic explosion and fire damage to the equipment and plant. Suggest to weigh carefully all potentials before use of Hydrogen gas as a preserving medium for equipment during shut down. Trust this will help you to evaluate carefully before use.
