My son is doing a science fair project. The results suprised us when we realized the nails became magnetized after a few days immersion in sodas of different brands. Some brands didn't become magnetized as quickly. I know it should be a simple problem but I have no clue why this happened. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think it is what happens: In alkaline enviromment the steel (Iron) forms a passive layer of magnetita (Fe3O4), which has magnetics properties. If your child is polarizationing the nail, so problably it is what happens. This is the principles of Anodic Protection.
