I work for a high-rise commercial building contractor and our client has specified galvanized pipe for all fire protection (mains and sprinklers). Black steel is most common and less expensive. Is there a significant advantage of galvanized over black pipe? Where would I be able to find test data comparing the two? Thank you.

Dear Sir: Galvanized pipe should provide some benefits re corrosion resistance to potable waters vs. "black steel"; however, the advantages may be difficult to quantify and comparative data difficult to find. Any advantages will also depend on how the system is used and the quality of the water. If the galvanize is only on the OD, we would not expect any advantages. Hope this helps! Acceptable piping materials for sprinkler systems are stated in a National Fire protection Association guideline ----- NFPA 13. Black pipe, "hot dipped" galvanized pipe, stainless steel, copper and PVC materials are all acceptable as per NFPA 13 (Chapter 3). Black pipe is cheaper than galvanized and is a good choice where "Victuallic couplings" can be used to speed installation. galvanized is a good choice where possible exterior/interior corrosion is a concern. Both can be threaded. Stainless and copper are used in specialized circumstances .....and of course, are expensive. I am sure that this questions has been asked before by others... Try the NFPA website on www.eng-tips.com. My opinion only MJC
